Better DTP systems use fonts with in-built tables
specifying the space necessary between each specific pair
of letters. This special treatment of spacing between
specific letter pairs is known as "kerning".
Kerning is the process of adjusting the spacing
between the characters. Some letters fit well
against others and some fit poorly. For example,
a 'T' followed by an 'o' is ungainly if the
standard spacing is applied - 'To'.
