The octal number system has a base of 8 using 0 to 7 as its symbols.In this system we would count from 0 to 7 and then carry 1 to the next position:

In a weighting table:
weights: 83 82 81 80
position number: 3 2 1 0
value: 512 64 8 1

So the octal number 1743 would mean:
(1x512)+(7x64)+(4x8)+(3x1) = 512 + 448 + 32 + 3 = 995 decimal
