| The
Internet is a global network of computers
connecting individual computers and networks
together into one huge network.
The Internet was
first developed in the 1960s by the U.S. military
to avoid the loss of communication in the event
of any single installation being inaccessible due
to war or natural disasters. |

Even if a main
centre is not functioning, data can take a
different route through the Internet to reach its
final destination.
It was not until the end of
the 1980s that the Internet really began to grow.
The National Science Foundation (NSF) set up five
supercomputer centres for university research so information could be shared between universities throughout the USA.
