Physical Connections - Fibre Optic Cables (1 of 2)

Fibre optic cables have a thin strand of glass in the centre that carries the light pulses.

The central strand is encased in glass cladding of lower density than the central strand which ensures that the light signal is kept within the central strand by total internal reflection.

The glass cladding may then be surrounded by strengthening wires and a plastic outer sheath.
