Data may be sent over further distances via either microwaves or radio waves.

Microwaves have a higher bandwidth than radio waves and can thus send more data per second.
However, microwave transmitters and receivers have to be aligned more accurately than radio wave transmitters and receivers and, in addition, microwaves are easily weakened by fog and rain.
