The Internet as we know it today did not come into existence until the early 1990s. Today the Internet has many thousands of servers and many millions of users throughout the world and it has revolutionised communication and information retrieval.

Information is kept on special servers called 'Web Servers' which contain pages of information written in a language called 'HyperText Mark up Language'(HTML), that allows them to be viewed by any computer with special 'Web Browser' software.
