This section describes the components within the
architecture of a Central Processing Unit (CPU). We will illustrate the
operations performed by the CPU, and examine computer
memory, considering the various types of memory found
within a computer.

Modern computer architecture is accredited to John Von
Neumann. This was first noted in his paper criticising
the methods used in computing at that time. Von Neumann suggested
that programs for the computer could be represented in
digital form in the computer's memory along with the
data.
